1. Introduction

BengalTutors ("we", "us", "our") operates the website bengaltutors.com and related services (the "Platform"). This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and your rights regarding it.

By using the Platform, you consent to the practices described in this Policy. If you do not agree, please discontinue use of the Platform.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information you provide directly

  • Account information: Name, email, phone number, password (encrypted), date of birth.
  • Profile information: Profile photo, bio, location (city/area), educational background, subjects taught (for tutors).
  • Verification documents (tutors only): National ID (NID) or Passport scan, academic certificates, references.
  • Lesson preferences: Subjects, level, schedule, learning goals.
  • Communications: Messages you send through our contact form, chat, or email.
  • Reviews and ratings: Feedback you leave for tutors or classes.

2.2 Information collected automatically

  • Device data: Browser type, operating system, screen size, language preference.
  • Usage data: Pages visited, search queries, time spent on pages, click behaviour, referring URL.
  • Network data: IP address, approximate geographic location (city level), internet service provider.
  • Cookies and similar technologies: See section 4 below.

2.3 Information from third parties

If you sign up using Google, Facebook, or another third-party login provider, we receive basic profile information (name, email, profile picture) from that provider. We also receive transaction confirmation data from SSLCommerz and our payment partners (bKash, Nagad).

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Create and manage your account;
  • Match students with tutors and operate the Platform;
  • Process payments and payouts;
  • Verify tutor identities and academic credentials;
  • Send service-related notifications (booking confirmations, payment receipts, lesson reminders);
  • Send marketing emails about new tutors, classes, and offers (you can opt out anytime);
  • Improve our products, run analytics, and build new features;
  • Detect fraud, prevent abuse, and enforce our Terms & Conditions;
  • Comply with legal obligations under Bangladeshi law.

4. Cookies & Tracking Technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies (pixels, local storage, SDKs) to operate the Platform and analyse usage. Cookies are small text files stored on your device. We use:

4.1 Essential cookies

Required for the Platform to function. They keep you logged in, remember your cart, and enable secure payments. These cannot be disabled.

4.2 Analytics cookies

We use Google Analytics (Universal Analytics and Google Analytics 4) to understand how visitors interact with the Platform — which pages they visit, how long they stay, which buttons they click. This helps us improve the experience. Google Analytics may collect your IP address (partially anonymised), browser data, and page interactions. You can opt out via the Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-on.

4.3 Advertising and conversion cookies

We use the following tools to measure ad performance and show relevant ads:

Remember your preferences — language, recently viewed tutors, filter selections.

4.5 Managing cookies

You can manage or disable cookies through your browser settings. Note that disabling essential cookies may break parts of the Platform. We provide a cookie consent banner on first visit where you can accept or refuse non-essential cookies.

5. When We Share Data

We do not sell your personal data. We share data only in these limited cases:

5.1 With other users

When a student requests a tutor, we share the student's first name, area, and request details with the matched tutor. When a tutor accepts, we share their profile, contact, and lesson details with the student.

5.2 With service providers

  • SSLCommerz — payment gateway (regulated by Bangladesh Bank);
  • bKash, Nagad, Rocket, Upay — mobile financial services for payouts;
  • Hostinger / AWS — hosting and storage;
  • Google Workspace — email and document storage;
  • Twilio / SendGrid — SMS and transactional email;
  • Zoom / Daily.co — video infrastructure for online classrooms.

These providers are bound by contracts requiring them to protect your data and use it only for the services they provide to us.

5.3 For legal reasons

We may disclose data when required by law, court order, or government request, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of BengalTutors, our users, or the public.

5.4 Business transfers

If BengalTutors is acquired, merged, or sells assets, your data may be transferred to the successor entity. We will notify you of any such change and your options.

6. Payment Information

BengalTutors does not store your credit/debit card details, bKash PIN, or any other payment credentials. All payment information is processed and stored by SSLCommerz, which is PCI-DSS Level 1 compliant. We receive only confirmation that a transaction succeeded (along with an order ID and amount).

7. Data Retention

We keep your data only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this Policy:

  • Active accounts: While your account is active and for 12 months after last activity.
  • Closed accounts: Up to 6 years after closure to comply with tax and legal obligations.
  • Transaction records: Minimum 6 years (per Bangladeshi tax law).
  • Marketing data: Until you unsubscribe.
  • Verification documents: Up to 12 months after account closure, then deleted.

8. Security Measures

We take security seriously and implement industry-standard measures:

  • HTTPS / TLS encryption for all data in transit;
  • Password hashing using bcrypt;
  • Encrypted storage of sensitive documents;
  • Role-based access — staff can only access data needed for their role;
  • Regular security audits and software updates;
  • Two-factor authentication for administrative accounts.

However, no system is 100% secure. If you suspect unauthorised access to your account, contact us immediately.

9. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
  • Correct — update or correct inaccurate information;
  • Delete — request deletion of your account and data (subject to legal retention requirements);
  • Restrict — limit how we use your data;
  • Portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format;
  • Opt out — unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time via the link at the bottom of any marketing email or by emailing us;
  • Withdraw consent — where processing is based on consent.

10. Children's Privacy

The Platform is intended for users aged 18 and over, or minors using it with parental supervision and consent. We do not knowingly collect personal data directly from children under 13. If you believe we have collected data from a child without parental consent, please contact us and we will delete it.

For minors using tutoring services, the parent or guardian's account is the primary account holder and is responsible for all data and activity.

11. International Data Transfers

Our primary servers are located in Bangladesh. However, some of our service providers (Google, Meta, Hostinger) may process data outside Bangladesh (typically in Singapore, India, USA, or Europe). When this happens, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as standard contractual clauses.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy occasionally. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. We will notify you of material changes by email or a prominent notice on the Platform. Your continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
